Bengali actors Parambrata Chattopadhyay and Swastika Mukherjee are in legal trouble. An FIR has been filed against them at Gariahat police station in Kolkata. The case relates to social media posts they made during the post-poll violence in West Bengal in May 2021.

Advocate Joydeep Sen filed the complaint. He alleged that the actors made remarks online that could have stirred political violence. The state was already tense after assembly election results came out that month.

What did they post?

On May 2, 2021, Trinamool Congress crossed the majority mark in the election results. Shortly after, Parambrata posted on X, then called Twitter: “Let today be declared World Thrashing Day.” Swastika replied to the post with: “Hahaha, let it be.”

Sen claims these remarks added fuel to an already volatile situation across the state.

The bigger allegation

The complainant linked the posts to the killing of BJP worker Abhijit Sarkar in Beliaghata, which took place hours after the posts went up. He argued that comments of this kind encouraged political violence on the ground.

The complaint also pointed to multiple incidents of alleged attacks, killings, arson, and assault on BJP workers across different districts during the post-poll period.
Sen cited Section 107 of the Indian Penal Code, which deals with abetment. Since the alleged incident happened in 2021, the complaint refers to IPC provisions, even though the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita is now in force.

Neither Parambrata nor Swastika has made any public statement about the FIR so far. No response has come from their teams either.
